Using a ruler
There are two ways that you can use these videos:
- Use the video as a movement demonstration. Watch the video and see how the person in the video moves their hands to draw lines with the ruler. Then practice drawing lines with a ruler, copying the actions in the video. Do it again, watch and copy as often as you need.
- Imagine yourself doing the action whilst watching it. Imagine that you are the person in the video. As you watch the video, try to imagine the feeling of moving your hands and drawing lines with a ruler. Then, practice drawing lines with a ruler, copying the actions in the video. Do it again, watch while imagining the feeling, and copy as often as you need.
Top tips for using a ruler
As well as watching the videos, follow our top tips for using a ruler:
- If you are using your left hand to hold the pencil, you might want to turn the paper round to draw your margin then turn the page around so the margin is on the left side of the page
- Put a non-slip mat underneath the paper to stop the paper slipping
- Copy the position of the fingers on the ruler to make sure your fingers don’t get in the way of the pencil when drawing the line
- Make sure that your fingers are in the middle of the ruler, not at the top or the bottom, so that it doesn’t move when you are drawing
Note: These movement demonstration videos have been designed to help children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD; dyspraxia) learn how to use a ruler successfully. The videos show a movement demonstration for drawing lines with a ruler, performed by a typically developing child model and recorded from a first-person viewpoint. A qualified occupational therapist instructed the child model how to perform the movement demonstration to ensure that an appropriate technique was demonstrated. The videos are free for use by dyspraxic people, parents, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, teachers, or anybody else who would find them useful for supporting the learning of how to use a ruler in children with dyspraxia/DCD.
