Top tips for tying cutting paper with scissors

As well as watching the videos, follow our top tips for cutting paper with scissors:

  • Check that you are using right- or left-handed scissors depending on which is your stronger hand
  • Hold the scissors in your strong hand and the paper in the other hand
  • Turn the paper when you get to the corners so that you are always cutting forward, rather than turning the scissors
  • You might find it easier to rest your forearms on a table as you cut
  • As you get more confident, ask an adult to draw out some different shapes, like triangles, circles and stars

Note: These movement demonstration videos have been designed to help children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD; dyspraxia) learn how to cut with scissors successfully. The videos show a movement demonstration for cutting with scissors, performed by a typically developing child model and recorded from a first-person viewpoint. A qualified occupational therapist instructed the child model how to perform the movement demonstration to ensure that an appropriate technique was demonstrated. The videos are free for use by dyspraxic people, parents, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, teachers, or anybody else who would find them useful for supporting the learning of scissor cutting skills in children with dyspraxia/DCD.
