Top tips for fitting a sanitary pad into underwear:
As well as watching the videos, follow our top tips for fitting a sanitary pad:
- Practise positioning and removing a sanitary towel when you are period-free so you know what to do.
- Sit down and pull your pants up towards your knees. Keep your knees apart so that pants are tight – this makes it easier to position the pad.
- Pads without wings are usually easier to manage.
- Some girls find it easier to have pre-prepared pants with pads already attached. Rather than changing the pad, they change their pants, putting pants/pad together into a bag to deal with later.
- Period pants are an alternative to using sanitary towels.

The videos show a movement demonstration for fitting a sanitary pad, performed by a typically developing child model and recorded from a first-person viewpoint. A qualified occupational therapist instructed the child model how to perform the movement demonstration to ensure that an appropriate technique was demonstrated. The videos are free for use by dyspraxic people, parents, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, teachers, or anybody else who would find them useful for supporting the learning of self-care skills in children with dyspraxia/DCD.
